Network Architect / Engineer

AEON Engineering Ltd. are recruiting a multi-skilled Network Architect / Engineer, joining the team in Cheshire, to assist in the design and management of ‘Big Science’ Projects. The ideal candidate is a confident and responsible engineer, with three years plus experience, and is looking to work on large-scale scientific and engineering projects which adopt bleeding edge technologies.

The Network Architect / Engineer shall report to the Technical Director, and shall lead on all aspects of network engineering within AEON Projects, including ownership and management of Project System Architectures incl.:

  • Generation and development of System Requirements and functional specifications
  • Iterative refinement of technical specifications as part of client interaction (requirements elicitation)
  • Design and development or network topographies
  • Data flow analysis, incl. Reliability Availability and Maintainability (RAM) Analysis
  • Identifying cross-network optimisation opportunities
  • Definition of appropriate levels of network security (incl. Policy)
  • Hardware specification
  • Generation and development of Verification and Commissioning Plans/Procedures (where not FAT)
  • Liaise with industry contacts and equipment vendors, generate RFQs and develop cost models



  • Relevant Engineering or Computer Science Degree with 3+ years of employment experience
  • Experienced in System Architect or Network Design Engineer roles
  • Comprehensive expertise in application of IEEE Standards
  • Experienced in implementation of the OSI Layer Model
  • Implementation experience across OSI Layer 1 to OSI Layer 4
  • Domain expertise in current and future transport layer technologies across all mainstream equipment vendors (CISCO, Alcatel, Nokia, Mellanox etc.)
  • Able to act as the authority on Network Security
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to travel, and work around international time-zones (GMT ± 12h)
  • Corporate membership, or eligibility for membership of, recognised (inter)national engineering institutes
  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary engineering team, and to act as the authority in all network-related matters


  • Knowledge of Systems Engineering, incl. contemporary system design techniques and tools
  • Knowledge of both Academic Network Infrastructure, and National Telcoms infrastructure
  • Proven track record in network design, including previous roles within medium to large technically complex projects
  • Experience in Verification and Network Commissioning Procedures
  • Experience in development of requirements and technical specifications, for large projects
  • Drive to engage in adjacent industry sectors, and a proven ability to write successful project bids
