JOB DESCRIPTION

AEON Engineering Ltd. are recruiting a multi-skilled Software Engineer, with the capacity to act as the Chief Software Engineer. As part of this role, you will be joining the team in Cheshire, to assist in the design and management of ‘Big Science’ Projects. The ideal candidate is a confident and responsible engineer and manager, with ten years plus experience, and is looking to work on large-scale scientific and engineering projects which adopt bleeding edge technologies.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:

  • Computer Science or Software Engineering Degree and relevant commercial experience.
  • Minimum of 5 Years experience in a similar role (Lead Software Engineer / Software Architect)
  • Demonstrated expertise in complex and autonomous Monitoring & Control (M&C) Systems 
  • Expert in TANGO (SCADA / DCS)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of x86, PA-RISC, Itanium, ARM, SPARC, and ALPHA architectures
  • Demonstrated proficiency using C, C++, Haskell, Lisp, Python, TCL, BASH, Perl and BLISS
  • Expert in Product Verification (planning and implementation) within the Software Domain
  • Expert in delivering Quality Assurance within the Software Domain
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficient with MS Office and commercial engineering suites:
    • GNU Tools (make, gdb, emacs, lex & yacc, readelf, obdjump, nm, ARM)
    • Configuration Management Tools (CVS, Design Sync, Clearcase)
    • Web (xhtml, php, css)
    • SCADA / DCS (TANGO)
  • Expert in utilising existing Quality Management Systems (QMS).
  • Demonstrated experience/understanding of Systems Engineering practices.
  • Proven experience in System Design within medium/large, technically complex, projects.
  • Proven ability to identify and secure commercial contracts within the Software Domain
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and on own initiative. 
  • Demonstrated business growth and development of corporate portfolio (i.e. submission of white papers, or presentation at international conferences)
  • Ability to work well under stress to meet “mission critical” deadlines.
  • Willingness to travel, and work around international time-zones (GMT ± 12h) (we encourage flexible working to take account of this)

Desirable:

  • TOGAF 9 Certification
  • Knowledge of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) Control Systems (incl. "Telescope Manager" Functionality)
  • Expert in Cloud Computing, Muticore Computing, "Big Data," Hadoop and Artificial Intelligence
  • Web design
  • "Enterprise" server management and hosting
  • Commercial acumen and business development ambition.
  • Bid writing and a demonstrated ability to secure projects
  • Corporate membership or eligibility for membership of, recognised engineering institutes.
  • Experience in academia and/or working with academics.
  • An eye for detail, and proven ability of dynamic solutioning.
  • Driven individual, aspiring to Head of Software Engineering, Head of Department.
